Hitting the gym is a great way to build strength and stamina outside of dance class. But the elliptical gets lonely sometimes, and working out with friends can be healthier—for your mind, body, and bank account—than going it alone. Last December, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American Council on Exercise (ACE) published their top 10 predictions for fitness trends in 2010, with “group fitness” making it onto both lists. According to the ACSM, individuals working out in a group setting—like a kickboxing, spinning, or step aerobics classes—are more motivated to accomplish their fitness goals. The competitive yet friendly environment pushes you to put in a little more effort than you would on your own. Interested in working with a trainer? Get some friends together for a group training session and split the bill; it’s more cost-effective for everyone involved.
