Spirulina may sound like a strange virus, but it is actually a super-food. A type of blue-green algae, the University of Maryland Medical Center says it is a complete protein since 62% of its makeup are amino acids. Spirulina also contains B vitamins, beta-carotene, vitamin E, and selenium (which decreases muscle damage). It promotes acidophilus and other probiotic growth – “good” bacteria – keeping sick days to a minimum. While supplements are one source, spirulina balls or green smoothie drinks are more enjoyable options. Found at natural food stores, Betty-Lou spirulina ginseng balls and Naked Green Machine juice serve up yummy doses of green power.
