ASSISTANT PROFESSOR–THEORY AND PRACTICE OF DANCE: The Smith College Department of Dance and the Five College Dance Department, which includes Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, seek a qualified applicant for a full-time, tenure track position to begin Fall 2009. The candidate should be a dance scholar actively engaged in the history, contemporary theory and practice of dance in the context of western theatrical expression and global traditions. We seek a Ph.D. involved in scholarly and/or creative research, with interests in issues of diversity, ethnicity, sexuality and gender, class, and cultural traditions, especially as these relate to current dialogues in global performance, scholarship and dance fusion. A key requirement for this position is the ability to discuss dance simultaneously as corporeal knowledge, cultural language, and performance art. Ideally we seek an academic dance scholar with a record of publication, who is also engaged in the studio teaching of a cultural or fusion movement form and/or the development of choreographic works. The candidate must have experience criticizing, mentoring, and evaluating undergraduate and graduate choreography and research/thesis projects. THE SURDNA FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES ROUND 9 OF THE SURDNA ARTS TEACHERS FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM (SATF), a national initiative to support the artistic revitalization of outstanding arts teachers. Arts teachers working in specialized public arts high schools AND arts-focused magnet and charter high schools can apply for grants of up to $5,500 in support of artistic growth, with a complementary grant of $1,500 provided to each Fellow’s school for post-fellowship activities.
