Fall for Dance, American Dance Guild, Soledad Barrio
From Across the Globe
Fall for Dance has chosen 20 mostly international companies to share programs at City Center. The BalletBoyz from the U.K., Maria Pages from Spain, the legendary Moiseyev folk dance group from Russia, the fresh young Laboratory Dance Project from South Korea, and more. Our humble U.S. of A. is represented by St. Paul’s TU Dance, NYC’s Jodi Melnick, and Pacific Northwest Ballet. The tickets have gone up from $10 to $15, but it’s still the biggest bargain around. Try your luck on Sept. 9 when they go on sale. Sept. 27–Oct. 13. www.nycitycenter.org. —Wendy Perron

Duende in Chelsea
The fiery Soledad Barrio and her internationally acclaimed company, Noche Flamenca, return to the Joyce for a soulful montage of authentic flamenco. The Village Voice heralds the Madrid-based ensemble for their passionate performances that “get to the dark heart of flamenco and inflame it with their artistry.” Last year they sold out at the Joyce; this year, their season stretches to two weeks: Sept. 18–30. www.joyce.org. —Emily Ancona

Honoring Our Elders
The annual gathering of the American Dance Guild pays tribute to two major figures in modern dance: Dianne McIntyre and Elaine Summers. A champion of dancing to live jazz music, McIntyre brings her signature Life’s Force, this time as a reunion of her past dancers and musicians. “Brash, bold, and sassy” are words she uses to describe it. Summers, originator of kinetic awareness (the amazing “ball work”), was a pioneer of multi-media back in the 1960s. She’ll show Windows in the Kitchen (1976) with Douglas Dunn dancing live alongside the late Matt Turney on film. Works by Molissa Fenley, Rudy Perez, Joseph Mills, and the German ausdruckstanz choreographer Harald Kreutzberg complete the program.
