6 Things We Love About Fall: Dance Edition

September 28, 2016

Here in New York City we love the respite fall gives us from the heat and humidity of steamy subway platforms and sweaty commutes. But we’re extra excited about the change in seasons because of the bounty of dance events upon us. From live performances to TV specials, here’s your guide to autumn:

1. Fall for Dance Festival: New Yorkers love this $15 ticket that takes audiences on a trip around the dance world. The 13th edition runs through October 8 and features national and international groups, including Hong Kong Ballet, Brazil’s Grupo Corpo and Australia’s Bangarra Dance Theatre. Didn’t get your tickets? Though the event is sold out, New York City Center is releasing any tickets as they are returned to the box office.

2. Attend a College Fair: If you’re curious about whether a dance degree is right for you, and you want to mingle with reps from several programs in one place, there’s still time to check out a college fair. Click here for info on upcoming events like Dancewave’s Dancing Through College and Beyond in New York City; the CNADM Fall Dance College and Career Fair in Oak Brook, Illinois; and Performing and Visual Arts College Fairs with locations throughout the U.S.

3. PBS Arts Fall Festival: Mark your calendars because you now have Friday night plans October 21 through December 23. PBS’ special fall arts programming will be hosted by none other than Lin-Manuel Miranda, and the kick-off event is “Hamilton’s America,” a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Broadway’s hottest ticket. The lineup also includes Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in performance (November 4) and the West End rival of Gypsy (November 11). Just you wait.

4. Vail Dance Festival: ReMix NYC: For the first time, Damian Woetzel brings a sampling of his Colorado–based Vail International Dance Festival to the Big Apple. November 3–6, catch a smattering stars, like Lil Buck, Carla Körbes, Michelle Dorrance, Sara Mearns and many more. Plus, the November 3 show features live music by Yo-Yo Ma.

5. Transition into Fall Studio Fashion: It’s officially time to break out your extra legwarmers, sweater and booties, and the only place you have to go is your closet—or your friend’s. If you need style inspiration, check out these looks from some of our favorite pros.

6. Restless Creature: Wendy Whelan, the documentary: This year’s New York Film Festival features the 2016 documentary profiling former New York City Ballet star Wendy Whelan and her transition into more-contemporary dance projects. There are four showings to swoon over this gorgeous and gracious dancer, October 9, 10, 13 and 16.

Happy Fall!
