The Cuban Connection, Evidently

February 12, 2013

Last night, Ronald K. Brown/Evidence, A Dance Company opened its weeklong run at the Joyce Theater. The sure-to-be-invigorating season include a new piece, Torch, and a slew of works set to music by the likes of Aretha Franklin, Sweet Honey in the Rock, and Fela Kuti. (See Brown talk about his dance amalgam in this “Choreography in Focus” video.)

The company, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2010, is making headlines for more than just exciting performances: Brown will soon travel to Cuba to select a company upon which he’ll make a piece that will come to The Joyce in 2014. (Can we cast our vote for Danza Contemporanea?) The Robert Sterling Clark Foundation has awarded a $215,000 grant to The Joyce and Brooklyn Academy of Music to fund this exchange, which will also offer arts administration training and internships in New York to Cuban arts professionals.
