Think Zinc

March 11, 2009

With the weather dancing back and forth between spring sunshine and winter gusts this time of year, you’re actually more likely to catch a cold than some rays. To help boost your immune system, make sure you’re getting enough zinc in your daily diet. Zinc promotes the development of white blood cells, which can prevent you from spending the first days of spring in bed with a box of Kleenex. Beef is one of the best sources of this cold-combating mineral, with more than 50% of your needed daily intake in just 3 ounces (about the size of a small hamburger). For more on-the-go (and vegetarian-friendly) options, try adding low-fat yogurt, cashews, swiss cheese, or oatmeal to your next meal or snack.
