We love any event that puts the spotlight on choreographers, especially since the entertainment world all-too-frequently sidelines their achievements. So, naturally, we're big fans of the World Choreography Awards.

For nearly a decade, the annual event has recognized dance produced for movies, TV shows/specials, music videos, and digital media. This year's World Choreography Awards nominees were just announced, and the list—highlighting dance made over the course of 2018—is incredibly impressive.

TikTok seems tailor-made for dancers. The app's short-form video format makes it easy to show off your best moves to a song that's gone viral. And an algorithm that favors unknown users means up-and-coming dancers have a better chance of reaching a large audience than they might on Instagram or YouTube.

Dance challenges are especially popular on TikTok, with over one billion views for the hashtag #DanceChallenge alone. Even people who've never heard of the platform know about campaigns like #TheGitUpChallenge, which started on TikTok, spilled over into Instagram and YouTube, and ultimately helped propel musical artist Blanco Brown to stardom.

The growing trend has had a wide-ranging impact on both the music and dance communities. Rising rapper Ambjaay's song "Uno" went viral on TikTok this past summer thanks in part to the #UnoDanceChallenge. "It's given me more fans and a bigger fan base, and I've been able to build more relationships and meet more people," Ambjaay says. "Dance gave the song more room to grow and create a different way to have fun."

Here are five of the best, most influential TikTok dance challenges.

School of American Ballet students (Rosalie O'Connor, courtesy SAB)

Do you have a "Strictly Ballet"–sized hole in your heart? Good news: There's an upcoming docuseries, "On Pointe," that just might fill it.

The School of American Ballet is teaming up with Imagine Documentaries and DCTV for the project. Though it's not yet clear where "On Pointe" will air, we do know that it'll follow talented SAB students preparing for professional ballet careers—much as Teen Vogue's popular "Strictly Ballet" web series did back in the day. But "On Pointe" marks the first time documentary filmmakers have been allowed access to the school, and it sounds like it'll paint an even more complete picture of the dancers' lives inside and outside the studio.
