Jonathan Matthews-Guzmán

Jonathan Matthews hails from Memphis, Tennessee, where they were subjected to an eclectic arts education of tap, musical theatre, choral music, Vaganova, and Irish step dance. A graduate of NYU Tisch School of the Arts with a minor in music from NYU Steinhardt, Jonathan studied with Gus Solomons, Jr., Phyllis Lamhut, and Stephen Petronio, and contributed to the processes of original works by Pamela Pietro, Charlotte Boye-Christensen, Kendra Portier, and Deborah Jowitt. Their studies have taken them abroad to Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance, Springboard Danse Montreal, the International Theatre Festival of Kerala, and Toscana Dance Hub, where they studied accompaniment for dance with Robert Boston. They additionally perform with such disparate groups as mishiDance, Darrah Carr Dance, ChristinaNoel & The Creature, Valerie Green/Dance Entropy, The Little Streams, and This is Not a Theatre Company, for which they are also the company's choreographer. They are the co-founder/artistic director of BREAKTIME, a performance duo with Holly Sass, with whom they are currently an Artist in Residence at Chez Bushwick. A collaborative musician, they accompany at Tisch Dance, mentor the students of Tisch's pedagogy program on musical collaboration, have composed for Giada Ferrone, Rashaun Mitchell, and Patrick Corbin, music direct for Medicine Show Theatre and Queens Shakespeare, Inc., and sing tenor with the Cecilia Chorus of New York, of which they are also a board member. Their writing has been published by Eye On Dance and the Arts, The Dance Enthusiast, The Journal of Dance Education, and Time Out NY. An avid teacher of wee ones, licensed to teach yoga through the Perri Institute for Mind and Body's 300-hour Pedagogy Course, Jonathan is passionate about sharing multidisciplinary study through physical practice.
