You've Got to See This Viral Mash-Up of Harry Potter and Hip Hop

October 11, 2018

What happens when you mix two really good things together? Sometimes, it can be magical. It’s practically guaranteed when one of those elements is the wizarding world of Harry Potter, and the other is—wait for it—dance-team–style hip hop.

The seemingly disparate worlds collided recently for the PAC Dance Team and Advanced Dance students’ performance for Walden Grove High School’s homecoming assembly in Sahuarita, Arizona. The video has quickly gone viral.

Why? For starters, I never thought I’d see Voldemort dancing to Nicki Minaj.

The choreography, by coach Kristi Lopez, isn’t what you’d expect from a dance team. Sure, there are the usual elements often seem on game day: precision dancing, formation changes, hip hop swagger and high energy. But the piece gets creative in the concept department, revisiting highlights from Harry’s time at Hogwarts.

Set to snippets of audio from the movie, its famous orchestral score and popular hip-hop songs, this dance has everything:

The Sorting Hat (shrewdly followed by choreography to Flo Rida’s “My House”)

Flying Lessons (with some saucy broom dancing)

A Harry vs. Draco Malfoy Face-off

…And Then Voldemort Shows Up

This isn’t the team’s first time in the spotlight. Last year, their Wizard of Oz–themed routine went viral, and the group even competed on “America’s Got Talent” this summer. To revel in all the Hogwarts glory, catch the full performance below.
