This ABT Dancer Is Nothing Short of A Hero
On Saturday night, American Ballet Theatre’s Grayson Davis showed how in times of crisis, it always helps to have a ballet dancer around.
The corps member had just watched his wife, soloist Cassandra Trenary, perform the title role in Alexei Ratmansky’s The Golden Cockerel at the Metropolitan Opera House (Davis hadn’t been performing due to a herniated disc). It was when they were waiting for the subway home that an altercation across the platform escalated into a man getting pushed down into the tracks.
Davis told the New York Times: “At first I waited for somebody else to jump down there. People were screaming to get help. But nobody jumped down. So I jumped down.” He lifted the man—who was unconscious from the fall—onto the platform, as people above helped pull.
Now stuck in the tracks himself, Davis heard the sound of a train in the distance. “I never realized how high it was,” he told the Times. “Luckily, I’m a ballet dancer, so I swung my leg up.”
ABT recognized Davis’ heroic act in company class this morning—just in time for him to make his reported return to the stage tonight in Le Corsaire. Thank you for your bravery, Grayson, and thank goodness for dancer strength and flexibility!
