Floating in from St. Petersburg
Known for the ethereal beauty of its port de bras, the Kirov (Maryinsky) Ballet brings some of our favorite dancers to Lincoln Center Festival. For those who crave seeing ballerinas like the sexy Diana Vishneva, the bold Yekaterina Kondaurova, and the dreamy Yevgenia Obraztsova, help is at hand. Vishneva stars in Ratmansky’s full-length Anna Karenina; Kondaurova gets a crack at the famous adulterer too. Obraztsova is the Tsar Maiden in The Little Humpbacked Horse, another Ratmansky re-creation, and also dances the third section of Balanchine’s Symphony in C. July 11–16. Look Who’s 40
This month Pilobolus will make magic from a mix of robots, rock ‘n’ roll, and Butoh. As part of the boundary-bending company’s 40th anniversary season, a four-week run at the Joyce with three programs highlights key past works, including Untitled (1975) and Duet (1992), as well as three premieres. Pilobolean partners for this season are artists of all ilks: Flying robots will soar in from MIT’s Distributed Robotics Laboratory Flight Team; the company will work with Japanese butoh master Takuya Muramatsu; and high-energy band OK Go will bring inspiration for a rhythmic collaboration. Everything Is Copasetic
Each summer, the American Tap Dance Foundation gathers tappers from around the world to turn Manhattan into Tap City. On July 9 at Symphony Space, Tony Waag (mayor of Tap City) and a slew of tap superstars, including Chloe Arnold, Brenda Bufalino, Michelle Dorrance, Jason Samuels Smith, and Derick K. Grant will perform a Salute to the Copasetics (the legendary troupe of hoofers that included Jimmy Slyde, Honi Coles, and Cholly Atkins).
