To follow up its record-breaking season last winter at City Center, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater makes its first visit to Lincoln Center since 2000. A world premiere by Ronald K. Brown; Garth Fagan’s quirky, Caribbean-flavored From Before; and Brown’s uplifting Grace will fill the stage of the David H. Koch Theater June 12–16. Eliot Feld Revisits His Home Base
What’s Eliot Feld been up to since he sold the Joyce Theater to the Joyce Foundation? He’s bringing his Kids Dance back to the Joyce, which, after all, wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for Feld and Cora Cahan’s inspiration 40 years ago. This time around, he’s premiering a zany caper for 37 students from his longtime altruistic project, the Ballet Tech School. Familiar Feld ballets like Meshugana Dance and A Stair Dance are also on the docket, and guest artists Kaitlyn Gilliland and New York City Ballet’s Tiler Peck perform at the gala on the first night. Breaking in the
Proscenium Stage
Since 2004, Sadler’s Wells has produced London’s three-day Breakin’ Convention, bringing together some of the world’s top hip-hop dance theater troupes. This month, the festival travels to the Apollo Theater for its U.S. debut June 13–16. Hosted and curated by rapper and b-boy Jonzi D (a London Contemporary Dance School alum), the festival promotes global artists who mix street styles with concert dance. Performers include Brooklyn-based flexers of Next Level Squad and Storyboard Professor; Brooklyn b-girl company Decadancetheater (see “Making It Happen,” May 2012); Korean b-boys of Project Soul Collective; and London-based artist Jane Sekonya, who infuses hip-hop with Afro-Caribbean style.
