Remembering David Bowie Through Dance

January 10, 2016

Songwriter and heralded misfit David Bowie died on Sunday at age 69 after an 18-month battle with cancer. The world didn’t just lose a musician who transcended many genres, it lost a performer who transcended many stages and forms. Bowie helped make music a performance art, and carried that collaborative spirit through to much of his other work, like writing for and acting in theater and Broadway.

Bowie was no stranger to dance either. Proof: This clip from 1988, in which he performs “Look Back in Anger” with La La La Human Steps. In the video, Edouard Lock praises Bowie for his non-dancer ability to pick up choreography. Bowie is accompanied by a wild Louise Lecavalier, who could certainly pass for a rocker herself. Lock announced earlier this year that his company would shut down. Though Lecavalier is still going strong on her own.

I think the best way for all of us to pay tribute to Bowie today is to kick off our shoes, turn on “Let’s Dance” and do just that.
