Sizzle in SF plus Juilliard

November 20, 2008

San Francisco brings sizzle to the hip hop scene this weekend! On Saturday, November 22, the city’s Hip Hop DanceFest is celebrating its 10th anniversary by offering two master classes taught by visiting performing artists at the City Dance Studios. The first class will be taught by the London based Flawless Dance Company and the second by Popin Pete of the Electric Boogaloos. The price is $20 for one class or $38 for both. Find out more at www.sfhiphopdancefest.com.

It seems too good to be true: a free repertory concert combining a talented cast of choreographers and performers? Well, believe it: Juilliard Dance presents New Dances/Edition 2008, with performances by all four classes of Juilliard’s dance division, in the school’s Peter Jay Sharp theater from December 10–14. Watch the dance stars of tomorrow perform newly commissioned works by Larry Keigwin, Johannes Wieland, Darrell Grand Moultrie and Sidra Bell. Tickets are available through the Juilliard box office (155 West 66th Street) beginning November 19. Call 212-769-7406 for more information.

Need a bit more avant-garde in your dance diet? Check out “Epic, Abstract, Actual,” a collaborative performance by Aura Fischbeck Dance and the Riley Project running December 5–7 at CounterPULSE in San Francisco. For only $12, you can see the groups’ artful investigations of diverse ideas like spaghetti westerns and favorite body parts. If you’re really feeling the pinch, you can take advantage of CounterPULSE’s “No One Turned Away” policy: volunteer or usher for any performance and see that show for free.
