Rare Sightings
It’s easy to equate “European dance” with big names like William Forsythe, Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, and Pina Bausch. But, just as many U.S. cities are teeming with lesser-known yet highly accomplished artists, so are the dance capitals of Europe. In an effort to bridge this continental divide, Movement Research, the center for experimental performance in New York, continues its International Dance Dialogues this fall. Created and curated by renowned ballet instructor Janet Panetta, the series includes classes with European artists who, despite the fascinating things they’re up to, rarely teach or tour in the U.S. Next up: UK- and Brussels-based choreographer Jonathan Burrows, a former Royal Ballet dancer who has received commissions from Sylvie Guillem and Ballett Frankfurt, teaches a composition workshop called “Writing Dance,” Oct. 31–Nov. 2.
