The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation has named the inaugural 21 Doris Duke Artists, each of whom will receive a multi-year cash grant of

$225,000, plus up to $50,000 more for audience development and retirement funding. The selected artists were chosen in the fields of contemporary dance, theater, and jazz, via an anonymous peer review They include Wally Cardona (Brooklyn, NY), Rinde Eckert (Upper Nyack, NY), Deborah Hay (Austin, TX), Marc Bamuthi Joseph (San Francisco, CA), Young Jean Lee (Brooklyn, NY), Ralph Lemon (NYC), Sarah Michelson (Brooklyn, NY), Bebe Miller (NYC and Columbus, OH), Meredith Monk (NYC), Eiko Otake (NYC), Takashi Koma Otake (NYC), Basil Twist (NYC), and Reggie Wilson (Brooklyn, NY). William Forsythe
is the recipient of the 2012 Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement. His former dancer and collaborator Jill Johnson, who currently heads the dance program at Harvard University, will present him with the award, which includes a $50,000 honorarium, on June 30 at ADF. Hubbard Street Dance Chicago will then perform a program that includes his Quintett (1993). Mikhail Baryshnikov
is the recipient of the 2012 Vilcek Prize in the Arts in Dance. The Vilcek Foundation, which honors foreign-born individuals for their contributions to American society in the fields of biomedical research and the arts and humanities, will award him $100,000. Michel Kouakou, a native of the Ivory Coast who founded Daara Dance in 2003, receives the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Dance and an honorarium of $25,000. The 2012 Joyce Award winners include Reggie Wilson, who will partner with Columbia College Chicago Dance Center for an evening-length commission. The Joyce Awards, presented by the Joyce Foundation, give $50,000 grants to artists of color towards the creation of new works in partnership with cultural institutions. —posted 1/24/2012

 

The London-based Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards for 2011 have been announced. The winners include Sylvie Guillem for 6,000 Miles Away (Oustanding Female Performance–Modern), Akram Khan for Vertical Road (Best Modern Choreography), and Steven McRae of The Royal Ballet (The Dance Times Award for Best Male Dancer). Québec-based choreographer Marie Chouinard has been awarded the rank of Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French Ministry of Culture. She has led Compagnie Marie Chouinard since 1990. —posted 1/23/2012

 

Isabella Boylston
, American Ballet Theatre’s newest soloist, is a 2011 Clive Barnes Award recipient. MJ Rodriguez, currently in the off-Broadway production of Rent, received the award in the theater category. The CBA were founded in 2009 by Valerie Taylor Barnes in memory of Clive, recognizing exceptional talents in dance and theater. —posted 12/7/2011

 

The 2011 USA Fellows in dance are Donald Byrd, Nora Chipaumire, Michelle Ellsworth, John Jasperse, Liz Lerman, Lar Lubovitch, and Morgan Thorson. They will each receive an unrestricted award of $50,000. —posted 12/5/2011

 

Included among the Rockefeller Foundation’s New York City Cultural Innovation Fund competition winners are Brooklyn Academy of Music, Casita Maria, Dance Films Association, Misnomer Dance Theater, and New York Live Arts. Each will receive a two-year grant of up to $250,000. —posted 10/13/2011

 

Trisha Brown
has been awarded the 2011 Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize. The award of about $300,000, named for the silent film stars, recognizes artists who’ve made a groundbreaking impact in their respective fields. Past recipients in dance have included Bill T. Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures has selected James Cousins to receive the New Adventures Choreographer Award, created by Bourne’s colleagues and friends in celebration of his 50th birthday. The 22-year-old Cousins, who studied at the London Contemporary Dance School, will receive a grant of at least £15,000 for a year-long residency with the company. David Parsons
has been honored with the 2011 Dance Masters of America Award. Past recipients have included Gwen Verdon, Alvin Ailey, and Jacques D’Amboise. —posted 8/24/2011

 

The 2011 Princess Grace Award winners have been announced: Alisa Alba (The National Institute of Flamenco), Joseph Gorak (American Ballet Theatre), Margaret Mullin (Pacific Northwest Ballet and our August 2011 “On the Rise”), and Frederick (Pete) Walker (North Carolina Dance Theatre) have received dance fellowships. Jeffrey Van Sciver (Dominican University/LINES Ballet) and Casia Vengoechea (The Julliard School-Dance Division) have received dance scholarships. Zoe Scofield (in partnership with DiverseWorks ArtSpace) and Olivier Wevers (in partnership with Spectrum Dance Theater) have received choreography fellowships. Jacqueline Burnett (Hubbard Street Dance Chicago), Nigel Campell (Luna Negra Dance Theater), and Chanel DaSilva (Trey McIntyre Project) have received Dance Honoraria. Charlotte Brathwaite and David Neumann have received works in progress residencies at Baryshnikov Arts Center. Special Project Awards go to Alex Ketley, Rashaun Mitchell, and Jimmy Orrante. Trey McIntyre Project
has been awarded a $100,000 “Our Town” grant from the National Endowment of the Arts. TMP will use the funds for its Boise Bright Spot Project, spending more time at its home base and expanding its outreach programs. —posted 7/12/2011

 

The International Society for the Performing Arts honored National Ballet of Canada director Karen Kain and London-based choreographer Akram Khan with the Distinguished Artist Award on June 16. Jorma Elo
has been awarded the Benois de La Danse Prize for Best Choreography of 2010 in Moscow. He was nominated for his Midsummer Night’s Dream for Vienna State Opera Ballet, and a new version of Slice to Sharp created for the Stanislavsky Ballet. —posted 5/31/2011

 

Andrea Snyder
will receive the Dance/USA Trustees Award on July 15 at the 2011 Dance/USA conference in Chicago. Snyder completes her 11-year tenure as Dance/USA’s executive director at the end of June. —posted 5/25/2011

 

The Herb Alpert Foundation and California Institute of the Arts have recognized Jess Curtis with the 2011 Alpert Award in the Arts in dance. The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has awarded 180 Fellowships to individuals from the U.S. and Canada in the sciences, humanities, and arts. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker
will receive the 2011 Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement. Former Martha Graham Dance company member Stuart Hodes will present De Keersmaeker with the award, which includes a $50,000 honorarium, during her company’s first ADF performances in June. School of American Ballet student Meaghan Dutton-O’Hara has received a 2011 Martin E. Segal Award, with $7500 for future study. She is scheduled to perform a lead role in Balanchine’s Who Cares? at SAB’s 2011 Workshop Performance in June. —posted 3/28/2011

 

Former Alvin Ailey, American Ballet Theatre, and Fosse star Desmond Richardson will receive the 60th annual Capezio Dance Award, given annually by the Capezio Ballet Makers Dance Foundation. North Carolina Dance Theater director Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux will present the award and a $10,000 honorarium to Richardson, the co-director of Complexions Contemporary Ballet, at a Complexions performance on May 24. American Ballet Theatre’s Joseph Gorak and Hamburg Ballet’s Maria Baranova have won The 2011 Erik Bruhn Prize in Toronto. Gorak and Baranova each received $7,500. Simone Forti
, Meredith Monk, and Yvonne Rainer have been honored with Yoko Ono Lennon’s 2011 Courage Award for the Arts. Ono Lennon established The Courage Awards in 2009. —posted 3/1/2011

 

The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage in Philadelphia
has announced nine Dance Advance Grant recipients for 2011, including Voloshky Ukrainian Dance Ensemble, Philadelphia Live Arts Festival, and DM Senior Advising Editor Brenda Dixon Gottschild. A total of $929,000 will be awarded. —posted 2/22/2011

 

Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux
and Patricia McBride will receive the first Ilona Copen Award on March 22 at an evening dedicated to the late founder of the New York International Ballet Competition. Bonnefoux is the artistic director and president of North Carolina Dance Theater, and McBride is the company’s associate artistic director and master teacher at the NCDT school. —posted 2/14/2011

 

American Ballet Theatre
has received a gift of $250,000 from singer and musician Prince, earmarked towards ABT’s educational programs. Prince tapped ABT soloist Misty Copeland to appear in his Crimson and Clover music video and invited her to perform with him onstage at several shows at Madison Square Garden this winter. —posted 2/11/2011

 

The Joyce Foundation has awarded Hubbard Street Dance Chicago a 2011 Joyce Award. HSDC will receive $50,000, which will support a new piece by SF-based choreographer Alonzo King. Aristic director of Festival Ballet Providence Mihailo Djuric is the honored guest of the “Vip is Inviting” project of the Belgrade Dance Festival. The former soloist of the National Theatre in Belgrade will be recognized at the festival in April, when FBP will make a guest appearance, for his promotion of ballet and Serbia abroad. —posted 1/21/2011

 

The Rock School for Dance Education has announced a challenge grant, up to $250,000, from Dr. Milton L. Rock. Money raised by the Milton Rock Challenge Grant will fund the school’s outreach program RockReach and student scholarships. —posted 1/10/2011

 

The Margaret Jenkins Dance Company (MJDC) has announced the recipents of the 2011 Choreographers in Mentorship Exchange (CHIME) grant. From the SF Bay Area, Kim Epifano will mentor Antoine Hunter, Sara Shelton Mann will mentor Benjamin Levy, and Jill Togawa will mentor Michelle Fletcher. From Southern California, d. The National Dance Project (NDP), an arm of the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA), has pledged $400,000 to 10 contemporary dance tours across the U.S., including Dance Theatre of Harlem‘s Dance for America Tour IV, Gallim Dance‘s Blush, Joe Goode Performance Group‘s The Rambler, and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui‘s PLAY. United States Artists (USA) has announced its 50 USA Fellowship recipients for 2010. Miguel Guiterrez, Dayna Hanson, Deborah Hay, Trey McIntyre, Bebe Miller, and Awilda Sterling-Duprey will each receive $50,000. —posted 12/8/2010

Biennale di Venezia’s Dance Sector director Ismael Ivo has been awarded the Ordem do Mérito Cultural (Order for Cultural Merit), one of the highest honors given by the Brazilian government—a first for a contemporary dancemaker. Ivo will receive the award on Dec. 2 from Brazil’s President and Minister of Culture at the Teatro Municipal in Rio de Janiero. —posted 12/1/2010

Theaterhaus Dance Company company coach Egon Madsen will receive the German Dance Prize lifetime achievement award and artistic director Eric Gauthier will receive the German Dance Prize “Future”. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater artistic director Judith Jamison will receive a National Award for Citizen Diplomacy from the U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy. Liz Lerman Dance Exchange

Susan Rethorst
has received a 2010 Alpert Award in the Arts. The Herb Alpert Foundation and California Insitite of the Arts (CalArts) have awarded Rethorst a $75,000 grant. Zoe Scofield of Zoe and Juniper has received an Alpert/MacDowell residency fellowship.  —posted 10/20/2010

 

The Shubert Foundation will support 450 nonprofit theater and dance companies nationally in 2010 grants. The organizations, which include the Lincoln Center Theater, the Goodman Theater in Chicago, and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, will receive grants ranging from $5,000 to $275,000, totaling $18.2 million. —posted 10/12/2010

Bill T. Jones
will be a recipient of the 2010 Kennedy Center Honors. Jones will receive the award at the Dec. 5 gala, attended by the President and First Lady. The evening will be televised nationally on Dec. 26.—posted 9/7/2010

 

Chan Han Goh
, former National Ballet of Canada star and current director of the Goh Ballet, will receive a FMA Art Achievement Award for her contributions to Canadian art and dance. —posted 8/27/2010

 

Calvin Royal III
has been awarded the Lorna Strassler Award for Student Excellence at The School at Jacob’s Pillow. He will receive a full scholarship to The School and a $2,500 cash stipend. Royal has been a member of ABT II since 2007 and will join the main company as an apprentice in October. —posted 8/11/2010

 

The 2010 Ruth Page Award will be presented to The Chicago Dancing Festival on August 28 at Millenium Park in Chicago. Accepting the award will be co-artistic directors Jay Franke and Lar Lubovitch and board chair David Herro. —posted 8/6/10

 

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has given a grant of $100,000 to the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company to support a second year of CHIME Across Borders, a year-long project that arranges for established choreographers to work with local San Francisco choreographers. In 2011, Ralph Lemon will act as Chair of MJDC. —posted 8/4/2010 

 

The winners of the 2010 Princess Grace Awards have been announced. Choreography fellowships have been awarded to Kyle Abraham (Abraham.In.Motion) for the Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School & Camp and Victor Quijada (Rubberband Dance Group) for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. Receiving dance scholarships are Craig Black (The Juilliard School) and and Andrew Wojtal (California Institute of the Arts) and receiving dance fellowships are Ashley J. Dance Theater Workshop
has been awarded a $75,000 grant by the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation. The grant will be used to expand The Suitcase Fund: A Project of Ideas and Means in Cross-Cultural Artist Relations. Founded in 1985, The Suitcase Fund has been actively involved in Eastern Europe; with the grant’s added support, expansion will include Mali, Lebanon, and Senegal. –posted 7/26/2010

 

The Capezio Ballet Makers Dance Foundation, a philanthropic organization, has selected Trisha Brown as the recipient of the 59th annual Capezio Dance Award. She will receive the award and accompanying $10,000 honorarium at New York City Center on Nov. 8, 2010 during the Career Transition for Dancers’ 25th Anniversary celebration. Trisha Brown
has selected Australian dancer/choreographer Lee Serle as her protégé for the 2010-2011 Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. The 2010 winners of Hubbard Street 2’s National Choreographic Competition are Samar Haddad King of Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre (NYC), Dominic Walsh of Dominic Walsh Dance Theater (Dallas), and Edgar Zendejas of ezdanza (Montréal). dance critic Sarah Kaufman has received the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. Kaufman wrote the provocative article “Make Room Onstage for More Than One Genius” in May 2009, which inspired Dance Magazine‘s January 2010 story, “Are We Overdosing on Balanchine?” —posted 4/15/2010

The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage has awarded $920,000 to 16 artists, companies, and presenting organizations for 2010–2011. Martha Clarke
will receive the 2010 Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement on June 27. The $50,000 choreographic award will be presented by screenwriter and playwright Alfred Uhry. Oregon Ballet Theatre
has been awarded three foundation grants. OBT received $300,000 from The James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation and $80,000 from the Collins Foundation. In addition, the James R. Kansas City Ballet
has been awarded a $900,000 challenge grant from the Kresge Foundaton earmarked for renovating the company’s permanent home. The Todd Bolender Center for Dance and Creativity, named for KCB’s former artistic director, will house the ballet company and its school. —posted 2/1//10

 

The Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards were presented last night at the Royal Opera House in London. Winners include Alexander Grant (De Valois Award for Outstanding Achievement); Leanne Benjamin, The Royal Ballet (Best Female Dancer); Paul Liburd, Scottish Ballet (Best Male Dancer); Ballet Black (Outstanding Company); and Merce Cunningham Dance Company (Best Foreign Dance Company). American Ballet Theatre’s Maria Bystrova has been named the Jennifer Alexander Dancer for 2010. Dane Campell
, director of Full Effect Dance Theatre, has been awarded the 2009 Dance Chicago Choreographer of the Year Award. He joins past awardees Lauri Stallings (2004) and Julia Rhoads (2002). —posted 12/22/09

 

Trisha Brown
has been named the 2010/2011 Rolex Dance mentor. Brown joins past mentors Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, William Forsythe, and Jirí Kylián. Next spring, she will select her protégé from a group of Rolex-nominated finalists for a year-long creative collaboration. —posted 12/08/09

 

Liz Lerman Dance Exchange
is a receipient of a $125,000 grant from MetLife Foundation. It will go towards the MetLife Foundation Healthy Living Initiave at Dance Exchange, a new program that combines art and wellness. —posted 10/30/09

 

American Ballet Theatre

The Joyce will use its funding for residencies and NYCB wil commission new works for a set designed by architect Santiago Calatrava.
