Double-sided Dancers: Performers who are hitting the books

As the national job market has become more competitive, many dancers have turned to higher academic studies in addition to pursuing careers on the stage. Whether earning a BFA dance degree or enrolling in a part-time BA program geared towards professional dancers, these students are finding ways to juggle schoolwork with studio work. Here are three examples of university programs geared towards pre-professionals and working dancers.
PNB’s Second Stage Program
Pacific Northwest Ballet’s Second Stage program supports dancers through both grants and career counseling. “It’s hard to think about life after dancing, [but] I know it’s important to have my degree for the future,” says PNB corps dancer Leah O’Connor. She put her grant towards her junior year at the University of Washington, where she is now a senior sociology major. “The hardest part was finding classes to fulfill major requirements that didn’t conflict with work,” she explains. Early on her advisors recommended attending community college first to complete an associate’s degree for less money, then transferring to University of Washington to complete the degree.
LEAP at Saint Mary’s College of California
Liberal Education for Arts Professionals (LEAP) is a one-of-a-kind BA degree program created expressly for professional dancers. Administered through Saint Mary’s College of California at affordable tuition fees, it’s offered in San Francisco, L.A., NYC, and, starting next spring, in Las Vegas. Class locations and schedules sync with performance and touring calendars, allowing students to complete their studies within a few years of part-time study. New York City Ballet dancer Lauren King, our “On the Rise” in March 2010, has been enrolled since 2007. “LEAP makes it so easy to schedule,” she says. “Core classes are on Sunday evenings and then I use Monday to do homework and study.”
University of Utah
As a full-time sophomore in the ballet department of the University of Utah, Molly Huempfner is also a trainee at Ballet West. The BFA program places strong emphasis on technique, using the ABT National Training Curriculum. Ballet students take class and rehearse many hours a day and take academic courses as well. Additionally, as a BW trainee, Huempfner rehearses with BW and sometimes even performs during the season. “I realized if I rely solely on my body and ballet for income, I will eventually have to change directions, so I chose to minor in nutrition,” says Huempfner. But academic work has only increased her passion for a ballet career—the health professional job can wait!
