President Obama and Misty Copeland Talk Race

March 13, 2016

Misty Copeland’s rise to the top of American ballet has been a cultural phenomenon. The ultimate proof: The fact that she carries enough weight to sit down with President Obama. In an interview with Maya Rhodan of Time, the two discuss the roads that led them to ultimate success in their fields, what they had to overcome to get there and what message they want to send to young African Americans growing up today. Copeland sounds relaxed and real; Obama talks fairly candidly about raising his daughters in today’s racial climate.

Below is a condensed version of the conversation. You can watch the full 30 minutes here.
