Celebrating NYC Pride Week and NYC Dance Week

This year’s New York City Pride Week may be the best one yet. Earlier today, The Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution guarantees a nationwide right to same-sex marriage. As New Yorkers and out-of-towners alike celebrate this victory alongside the annual Pride Week festivities (most notably the parade on Sunday!) and the city takes on a rainbow hue, another celebration is underway. NYC Dance Week celebrates the diversity of dance in NYC and provides free classes at dozens of studios throughout the city. Looking to celebrate both? Here are some ways you can show your pride through dance activities:



  • Take a vogue class
    at the Alvin Ailey Extension. This Saturday’s class is free thanks to NYC Dance Week!


  • Have a movie marathon of classic LGBTQ films that feature dance.     Paris is Burning documents the origins of voguing in NYC, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show is always a good choice if you’re up for a sing-along.


  • Attend NYC Pride dance parties: a masquerade ball featuring “special performances and secret acts” on Friday, a college-themed party at the Hammerstein Ballroom on Saturday and the annual Dance on the Pier on Sunday, with special guest Ariana Grande.


  • Revisit important dance works that tackled LGBTQ issues, such as Bill T. Jones’     Still/Here.
