At Sunrise, A New Beginning

September 11, 2013

Whether you’re witnessing his heart-wrenching This Bitter Earth, his utterly moving A Place for Us, or the perennial favorite After the Rain, Christopher Wheeldon’s pas de deux have a way of rendering you speechless, sending tears streaming down your cheeks. It’s hard to have that visceral response unless you’re actually there in the audience—screens have a funny way of curbing the emotion. Today, however, New York City Ballet created an exception to that rule.

Filmed on the 57th floor of 4 World Trade Center at sunrise, NYCB principals Maria Kowroski and Ask la Cour performed an excerpt of After the Rain in commemoration of September 11, 2001 and the company’s experience overseas that day and the next. It’s truly breathtaking. Watch the video “New Beginnings” here.
