Ballet Hispanico Celebrates

April 8, 2012

Tonight Ballet Hispanico honors its own at a gala to celebrate its season at The Joyce Theater that starts next week.

The big bash honors Jody Gottfried Arnhold, a leader in dance education and a longtime board member. Called a visionary by Dance Teacher, Arnhold has helped Ballet Hispanico expand in numerous ways.

For our issue on racial diversity in July 2010, we featured Ballet Hispanico on the cover. In that story artistic director Eduardo Vilaro talked about the global village. For an inside look at the company see our behind the scenes video of that shoot.

The Ballet Hispanico season (April 17–29) includes four pieces by our April cover subject, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa; a revival by William Whitener, director of the expanding Kansas City Ballet; and two works by Ronald K. Brown.

One of the three different programs also includes Eduardo Vilaro’s first choreography since he was named artistic director. In our “Choreography in Focus,” Vilaro talks about the cultural pulls he feels as a choreographer and director. And, for an enticing look at the fun and quirky sides of Lopez Ochoa, here’s our behind the scenes video of her cover shoot.
