Carla Comes Home

We here at Dance Magazine couldn’t be more thrilled that Pacific Northwest Ballet is returning to NYC next week, the first full-company visit in more than 15 years, bringing Jean-Christophe Maillot’s spare Roméo et Juliette and an all-Balanchine program. We admire many of the dancers from throughout the ranks (including our “25 to Watch” Leta Biasucci). But we are especially anticipating the homecoming, of sorts, of Carla Körbes, PNB’s Brazilian (Brazilliant?) ballerina who studied at School of American Ballet and performed with New York City Ballet before leaving for Seattle. (Here’s her February 2010 cover story). Her sweeping but dynamic lyricism, the fluidity of her lines, and her bright presence are captured in several of the videos on PNB’s excellent Youtube channel and the Guggenheim Museum’s Works & Process programs, and in the recent film below, which liberally uses slow-motion effects:
