Class in August: Four Good Finds

July 31, 2012

Yes, somehow it’s already August 1. But there are still plenty of chances to dance this summer, especially if you’re looking for smaller workshops and classes, rather than committing to a full-blown intensive. Here are a few more off-the-beaten-path options in New York that would be at the top of my list (click on each for full description):

Improvisation/Field Dances

Led by Jon Kinzel with Robert Swinston

New York City Center, Aug. 6–10

A week-long workshop focused on improvisation with the contemporary choreographer Jon Kinzel, using Merce Cunningham’s “Field Dances” as a guide. Mon–Fri, 2–5 p.m. Warm up with Cunningham technique taught by Robert Swinston, 12:15–1:45 p.m, included in the full workshop price of $150.

Vogue the Old Way

With Cesar Valentino

Peridance, Aug. 6, 8, 10

Clean up your foundation so you can get better at the complicated stuff, in this class covering classic and current voguing trends. Mon, Wed & Fri, 4:30-6 p.m. $18/class, $54 for the series.

Dance Heginbotham

With John Heginbotham

Mark Morris Dance Center, Aug 14 & 16

The former Mark Morris dancer and up-and-coming choreographer teaches excerpts from his fun, athletic repertory. Tue & Thu, 12–3 p.m. $25/class, $45 for both.

Dance Practice

With Anneke Hansen

Kazuko Hirabayashi Dance Theatre, Aug 3 & 10

The last two classes in a spring/summer series with this thoughtful young artist, who’s as committed to teaching as she is to choreographing. A chance to develop strength, flexibility, anatomical knowledge, and creativity, both mentally and physically. 10 a.m.–12 p.m. $12/class.
