Dancer/Choreographer Nancy Meehan Passes at 85

November 30, 2016

Nancy Meehan, known for her work with Erick Hawkins and her abstract, nature-inspired dances, passed yesterday at the age of 85.

Meehan began her career dancing for Anna Halprin before moving to New York to join Erick Hawkins Dance Company. She soon grew to be a standout of the troupe, where she danced until 1970 when she formed her own company.

Though contemporaries with Yvonne Rainer and Simone Forti and working at a time when the rejection of dance technique was a growing trend, Meehan carved out her own style that required extensive dance training and precision. She continued to make work for her company into her 80s.

Also an educator, Meehan taught at American Dance Festival, the Erick Hawkins school and several colleges throughout the country.

Our thoughts are with her family and friends.
