Dancing Through Life

November 5, 2013

You’ll meet dancers in surprising places. We’re everywhere: in government offices, behind camera lenses, on movie sets, even on reality shows like “Project Runway.” For instance, you have probably seen news anchor Tanya Rivero on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” But did you know she’s a former corps member of New York City Ballet?

Rivero spoke about her training in “Beyond Performance,” an annual Dance Magazine supplement: “Dancing taught me the discipline and focus I use in my job everyday. And of course, there are the hours. After the crazy schedule I had as a dancer, working evenings and weekends never fazes me.”

On Monday, November 18, Rivero will be moderating a symposium “Dancing Through Life, Living Through Dance” at her high school alma mater, the Professional Children’s School. She’ll be joined by other PCS alumni, including NYCB principals Tiler Peck and Robert Fairchild, Broadway vet Rick Faugno, Dance/NYC head Lane Harwell, New York Theatre Ballet’s Steven Melendez and Gillian Turner—an SAB alum turned national security consultant, who was on the staff of the White House National Security Council for four years during both the Bush and Obama administrations.

Dancers rock.

The PCS panel is free and open to the public, though reservations are suggested. Click here for details. And be sure to check out “Beyond Performance,” in which former dancers share how dance has shaped their second careers in fields like costume and fashion design, stunts, and sports physical therapy.
