Fall for Dance Starts Thursday!

September 23, 2012

Every fall it’s time to get excited about the lineup at Fall for Dance. Even though the ticket price has gone up from $10 to $15, it’s still a steal. It’s even an education. The first night alone is awesome in its mix of aesthetics. We’ll see the blast of energy known as the tap dancer Jared Grimes. (Read our cover story on him or my blog about his Run the Night series.) The Ballet Boyz, those bad boys of London who broke away from The Royal Ballet to create an adventurous repertory company, bring a U.S. premiere. Nederland Dans Theater, whom we don’t see enough of, are bringing Shutters Shut by Paul Lightfoot. And, perhaps the most new and raw entry, Christopher Wheeldon has made a ballet that integrates Graham star Fang-Yi Sheu into the ballet aesthetic. This quartet, 5 Movements, 3 Repeats, premiered at Vail International Festival last month, and while it was intriguing, it wasn’t a sure-fire success. But it has so many interesting elements: The duet for Fang-Yi and Craig Hall was fantastic,  and so was the one for Wendy Whelan and Tyler Angle (which also was shown at the NYCB gala last week).

It’s probably sold out, but here’s our blog on how to get tickets
