Free Classes in Washington

February 27, 2013

If you live in the DC-area, consider heading to the Dance Institute of Washington for a weekend of free dance events. Commemorating its 25th anniversary, the studio is holding a “Fall in Love with Dance” open house, full of classes and student performances. Sunday’s schedule highlights the studio’s adult drop-in program, which includes classes in hip hop, modern, Brazilian dance, Zumba, and ballet.

Founded in 1987 by former Dance Theatre of Harlem soloist Fabian Barnes, Dance Institute of Washington began as a program for underserved youth in the DC area. Today, it’s a year-round pre-professional training academy that has received special recognition from Oprah, Michelle Obama and the mayor of Washington, DC. It sponsors a number of outreach programs and houses a youth repertory ensemble, as well as a professional dance company, Washington Reflections. Just last night (February 27), Barnes received the 2013 Amtrak Pioneer Award for his outstanding work in the community.
