July 9–11
The latest installment of an eight-part series by Wally Cardona and Jennifer Lacey focuses on the quirks of the creative process. Each performance of The Set Up invites a different master artist—this time, French baroque dancer Jean-Christophe Paré—to discuss his or her medium, followed by a reflection that morphs into a dance. July 13
The American Tap Dance Foundation is celebrating the percussive power of tap by performing Tap It Out, a free extravaganza in Times Square. This performance, in which hundreds of hoofers of all ages and levels will create a patchwork of sound, is the culmination of the annual Tap City Festival (July 6–13). July 13–14
Souleymane Badolo presents Barack, which in his native language Gurunsi means “greeting.” A recent graduate of the MFA dance program at Bennington College, the choreographer completed research work in Africa this past February, supported by The Suitcase Fund of New York Live Arts. The piece focuses on Badolo’s journey—and those who have aided him—while living in the States (he hails from Burkina Faso). 77 Water St., 2PM & 4PM, River to River Festival
