From Stage to Studio
Most people think of the Joyce as a destination for performances by big-name national and international dance companies. But 20 blocks north of the Chelsea venue, at its affiliated DANY (Dance Art New York) Studios, you can find one of the theater’s lesser-known offerings: its series of master classes with the in-demand artists on its roster. While Vancouver-based Crystal Pite is in town this month for the Joyce debut of her company Kidd Pivot (Nov. 28–Dec. 2), she’ll teach a class at DANY on Nov. 30. The two-hour session, according to the Joyce’s website, is “explorative and non-performative; its focus is on the play between analysis and instinct and the use of improvisation both as a tool and an experience.” On Dec. 7, London’s Russell Maliphant leads a workshop that may provide some insight into the process behind his Rodin Project, which he brings to the Joyce Dec. 5–9.
