Happy World Ballet Day!

September 30, 2015

It seems like every day of the year has become a “holiday.” Thanks to social media, we now celebrate everything from National Pancake Day to Measure Your Feet Day (seriously, it’s a thing on January 23).

But World Ballet Day is different. For the second time ever, ballet companies across the globe have joined together today to offer 23 consecutive hours of behind-the-scenes class and rehearsal footage, plus interviews with top dance luminaries. In addition to the five main livestreams from Bolshoi Ballet, Australian Ballet, The Royal Ballet, National Ballet of Canada and San Francisco Ballet, several other companies have half-hour guest spots this time around. Here’s the full lineup:

    • Last night, the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Bangarra Dance Theatre and National Ballet of China had features during The Australian Ballet‘s segment.

    • Les Ballets de Monte Carlo
, Hamburg Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater and the Stanislavsky made cameos in the Bolshoi Ballet‘s programming this morning.

    • Right now, The Royal Ballet is sharing its hours with Birmingham Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, Northern Ballet and Scottish Ballet (David Dawson’s Swan Lake rehearsals were magnificent! We need more of his work in the U.S.).

    • National Ballet of Canada
‘s segment—coming up next—will also showcase American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet and Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal.

  • The day will end at San Francisco Ballet with special features from Houston Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet.

Whew! What an incredible lineup. Every bunhead with an internet connection should get to worldballetday.com right now.
