Highlights of the 2015 Dance Magazine Awards in Pictures

December 7, 2015

There may not have been a red carpet, but last night at the 2015 Dance Magazine Awards, the stars of the dance world came out to play. We celebrated the luminous Karen Kain, Soledad Barrio, Marcelo Gomes, David Vaughan and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar with dancing and festivities. Their award presenters, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Martin Santangelo, Julie Kent, Valda Setterfield and Millicent Johnnie, respectively, gave heartfelt speeches about how these dance legends have changed their lives, and the incredible sacrifices they’ve made for dance. From Gomes, who left his home country and entire family to pursue ballet as a teenager, to Zollar, who pushes the boundaries of modern dance with her company, Urban Bush Women, the stories of the awardees made for an inspiring evening.

Dance Magazine’s editor at large, Wendy Perron, was our host for the evening.

Baryshnikov presented National Ballet of Canada artistic director Karen Kain with her award. The two legends first met when Baryshnikov defected to Toronto.

Awardee Soledad Barrio performed with her troupe, Noche Flamenca. Barrio is the first flamenco artist to be honored with a Dance Magazine Award.

American Ballet Theatre soloists Cassandra Trenary and Thomas Forster performed an excerpt from Gomes’ haunting Aftereffect.

Julie Kent gave her longtime partner Gomes his award with a tearful speech.

Urban Bush Women performed an excerpt from Walking with ‘Trane in tribute to Zollar.
