Jessica Lang To Open a Dance Center In NYC

Lately, it seems like everyone has their eyes set somewhere just outside New York City. The longtime Rockville, Maryland-based American Dance Institute is moving to a new home in Catskill, New York. Stephen Petronio has announced plans to launch a choreographic space in Pawling. More and more, artists are looking for creative retreats, away from the city’s stresses and high rent.
But not so fast—there are still plenty of artists investing in New York. Today, Jessica Lang announced that come September 2016, she will be opening the Jessica Lang Dance Center in Long Island City, Queens, a neighborhood that’s one train stop from Manhattan. The 6,100-square-foot space will house Lang’s company and a new school with year-round programming for children and adults. She also plans on holding workshops, master classes, and summer and winter intensives. The director of the school will be Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater dancer, and Lang’s husband, Kanji Segawa.
Lang, who until the founding of her company 2011 was mostly known as a freelance ballet choreographer, has been building her presence in NYC over the past few years. It looks like her commitment to the city is only growing from here.
