Each year, the US Department of State and the Brooklyn Academy of Music choose three American dance companies for its DanceMotion USA cultural diplomacy program. For 2017, the sixth year of the initiative, DanceMotion will send three New York City-based companies to foreign countries. Keigwin + Company will travel to Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia and Tunisia; Stephen Petronio Company to Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam; and Reggie Wilson/Fist and Heel Performance Group to the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Panama.
The goal is for these companies to expose locals to new dances, exchange valuable information with foreign artists and work with people with disabilities, the LGBTI community and at-risk youth. They will spend four weeks performing, teaching, and leading workshops and talks. Foreign companies will also be selected to travel to the US, though they have not yet been chosen.
