Lights, Camera… You Decide

November 28, 2012

Ever thought about making your own dance film? Think you might be the next Wim Wenders? The Dance Films Association is seeking submissions for its second annual Capturing Motion NYC contest, open to New York City high school students. According to the application guidelines, your one- to five-minute film “should address the relationship between dance and the camera, linking the two in imaginative ways. Films can be documentary, narrative or art films.”

Looking for inspiration? Whether you’re a rookie filmmaker or have some experience behind the camera, you might glean some ideas at the Dance Film Lab holiday party, Dec. 18 at Dance New Amsterdam. The evening features a screening of short works by Marta Renzi, Victor Lazaro, Auri Jackson, Alexandra Pinel, and Christy O’Harris (curated by Moviehouse), followed by some refreshments and classic holiday movie clips. To hear from six pros making dances for screens large and small, check out our story from last April, “When the Camera is Your Partner.”

Selected Capturing Motion NYC films will be shown at the Dance on Camera Festival in February; the winning selection gets a special screening at Lincoln Center. The deadline to apply is January 4. Find out more (and watch last year’s first-place film) here.
