Monday Night Tradition Continues (and seeks applications)
In a frenetic city like New York, where there is constantly something new to see and do, it’s nice to be able to count on certain unchanging rituals. One of those, for devotees of contemporary performance, is Movement Research at the Judson Church, the free, low-key Monday night series where artists show work in various stages of development, usually in that murky, still-figuring-out-what-it-is phase that can be even more interesting than a polished product. You might only go once or twice a season, but it’s somehow comforting to know that, on any given Monday, people are filing into the West Village sanctuary to see what others are working on, playing with, thinking about.
Over the past few months, it’s been unclear whether the Judson series would continue this fall. A Movement Research e-newsletter in May kept the details vague, saying only, “At this point in time, we are not yet accepting applications for the upcoming season. Movement Research is currently in negotiations regarding our continued presence at Judson Church.” Happily, MR announced last week that Monday nights at Judson will continue, and they’re now accepting applications from choreographers for the 2012–13 season. Here are the guidelines and application form. The deadline to apply is August 16.
