More Than A Statistic

Former Bill T. Jones dancer Rosalynde LeBlanc Loo is embarking on an ambitious project—to raise $30,000 through an Indiegogo campaign to fund a documentary about Jones’ D-Man in the Waters. She remembers watching the piece at age 16, and from then on knew she wanted to be a dancer. The documentary profiles Demian Acquavella, whose fight against AIDS paralleled the making of the piece itself. Much like Jones’ work Still/Here, this piece had a tremendous impact on the LGBT and dance communities, forcing this situation into the spotlight when many still refused to discuss it years after the virus was initially discovered.

D-Man
has become one of the most acclaimed dances in the company’s repertoire. Loo, along with executive producer and choreographer Sean Curran, hopes that with this project more people will hear Demain’s story as representation of the countless others who were taken by this devastating disease. As Jones notes, “There will always be someone right now who needs someone to see them, rather than a statistic.”
