Electric performances, thought-provoking choreography, buzzy bodies of work—the artists on our annual list of dancers, choreographers, directors, and companies poised for a breakout share an uncanny knack for arresting attention. They’ve been turning heads while turning what’s expected—in a performance, from a career trajectory—on its head. We’re betting we’ll be seeing a lot more of them this year, and for many years to come.
Many dancers marry within the industry, finding common ground through similar triumphs and struggles, and sometimes even sharing the stage together. But there’s also something special about building a life with someone whose career is one step removed: having a spouse who’s dance adjacent, who works within the arts, yet is not fully immersed in professional dance culture.
The dancers, choreographers and scholars that make up this remarkable group of 2022 Dance Magazine Award honorees are notable not only for their artistry but also for their impact on the field of dance and the world at large.
Since joining NYCB, Woodward has delighted onlookers with her mix of elegant classicism and ebullient pluck. Both offstage and on it, she brings a warmth and generosity that make her appear just as at home in the Sugarplum Fairy’s mint-green tutu as it does in the minimalist gold lamé leotards of Pam Tanowitz’s Bartók Ballet.

Wayne McGregor and Christopher Wheeldon, who have created landmark roles for him over the past two decades, both call him “shy,” and the 45-year-old agrees, describing himself bashfully as “quite tense about my abilities.” Yet, […]
