Pitt attempts a Gene Kelly-inspired record break!

August 20, 2012

This Thursday, if you’re anywhere near it, get yourself to the University of Pittsburgh. There you will see around 3,000 incoming freshmen holding umbrellas and dancing on the lawn adjacent to Pitt’s Petersen Events Center. It’s to honor the 100th anniversary of Gene Kelly’s birth and to try to break the Guinness World Record for the “Greatest Number of People Simultaneously Performing an Umbrella Dance at a Single Venue.” Later on, in October, Patricia Ward Kelly (Gene’s widow) will be in town for Pitt’s Gene Kelly Centennial Celebration. Gene Kelly got a BA in economics from Pitt and even attended Pitt’s School of Law for a couple of months. Pittsburgh is proud to be his hometown, as well they should be!
