Rebecca Kramer (1916–2014)

June 17, 2014

Rebecca (Becky) Kramer/Stein died April 8 2014, two days shy
of her 98th bithday. She along with five other first generation American Jewish young dancers founded
the New Dance Group in the late 30s. They were dancers who espoused ” Dance is a Weapon” and made work embracing left wing political idealogy. In those
fervent years they performed for unions and championed the working class. The New Dance Group grew to be a major dance institution flourishing until 2008
. Kramer danced in Anna Sokolow’s Company, touring Mexico in the 40s. She also taught movement for actors for the renowned Group Theater.
Leaving dance, she became a sculptor whose abstract work was informed by her dance background.
