Scrambling the Routine

October 23, 2012

Do you ever find yourself in a class rut? You’ve discovered a teacher you love, a class that seems to meet all of your movement needs, and you attend religiously—until one day, you realize that what used to feel fresh has become routine, or doesn’t challenge you the way it once did. That doesn’t mean you need to abandon this once-beloved ritual for good, but maybe it’s time to throw yourself into something new for a few weeks. If you’re in New York, there’s never a shortage of opportunities to try something completely unfamiliar. Here are a few class and workshop series that recently started (or are coming soon) that could help you shake up the day-to-day:

  • >> The celebrated flamenco dancer Soledad Barrio, leader of the company Noche Flamenca, is now teaching regularly on the Upper West Side. Four days a week, she offers two levels: Beginner (for absolute beginners) and, for those with a basic foundation, Technique.

  • >> Current and former members of the Trisha Brown Dance Company are now teaching at Dance New Amsterdam, Wednesday nights through December 19. DNA’s exciting Company Class Series, where you can learn repertory and make connections with New York choreographers, is also in full swing. On deck are David Parker/The Bang Group (through Nov. 1), Susan Marshall & Company (Nov. 6-20), and Shen Wei Dance Arts (Nov. 27-Dec. 16).

  • >> Peridance is always a good place to look for workshops, especially with contemporary and hip hop artists. Coming up are members of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago teaching HSDC repertory (Nov. 4), Helen Pickett teaching Forsythe-based Improv Technique (Nov. 5–9) and many others.
