Ballet lovers have been hanging their heads low ever since Carla Körbes announced that she would be retiring this spring. She initially mentioned that she wouldn’t be putting aside her pointe shoes entirely, but never released details. Now we know that’s true: The Vail International Dance Festival, led by former New York City Ballet dancer Damian Woetzel, has announced that Körbes will be its dance artist in residence for 2015. Her programming for the festival, which takes place July 27–August 9, has not been announced. Last year’s artist in residence, American Ballet Theatre’s Herman Cornejo, danced a mix of everything from Nureyev’s Diana and Acteon to excerpts from Martha Graham’s Letter to the World.

It’s all part of Woetzel’s effective mix of gathering big dance stars, pairing them with dancers from other companies, and having them dance unusual repertoire. This summer will be no exception. Wendy Whelan and current NYCB principals Sara Mearns and Tiler Peck; ABT’s Misty Copeland, Isabella Boylston and Cornejo; Boston Ballet’s Misa Kuranaga and Jeffrey Cirio; Ailey’s Linda Celeste Sims and Antonio Douthit-Boyd; Savion Glover; and Lil Buck are just some of the names. As for new works, there will be premieres by John Heginbotham, Pam Tanowitz, Silas Riener and Rashaun Mitchell, Matthew Neenan, and Lil Buck, danced by their own dancers, other troupes, and themselves.

So the only question left is: Who is going to join me in the mountains this summer?
