This Just In: Tony Awards Announces 2015 Nominees

April 27, 2015

At Dance Magazine, we’ve been thrilled that this year has been one of the biggest for dance on Broadway in a long time. And in our opinion, the danciest productions of the season were the ones that truly stood out. But of course, we figured some of our natural bias might lean us that way.

Until now. The 2015 Tony Award nominees have been announced, and some of the most nominated are dance-centric shows. An American in Paris tops the list with 12 nods, including Best Musical, Best Choreography (Christopher Wheeldon) and Best Actor and Actress (Robert Fairchild and Leanne Coppe). Also up for Best Choreography is Joshua Bergasse for On the Town. The King and I, a Jerome Robbins revival, came in with nine nominations. Also of note: Chita Rivera in The Visit, Sting’s The Last Ship and Bergasse’s other project, Gigi. Notably absent is the much talked about Harvey Weinstein production, Finding Neverland, which marked Mia Michaels’ Broadway choreographic debut.
