What ballet made Misha an American?

February 3, 2013

To my eyes, it was Twyla Tharp’s Push Comes to Shove, which she created for Mikhail Baryshnikov at American Ballet Theatre in 1976. The ballet requires a male dancer who can slip between super virtuosity and cool-guy sauntering. For those of us who loved and miss this ballet—one of Tharp’s wittiest—help is at hand. The Pennsylvania Ballet perform it this weekend, Feb. 7–10 at the Merriam Theater in Philly. It’s accompanied by Balanchine’s Square Dance and Wheeldon’s heavenly After the Rain.
