Another Reason to Get Your "Om" On

December 16, 2014

With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, dancers are likely to be seeking some respite, perhaps in the form of yoga class. We already know it’s a great way to unwind while staying active.
Now, new research from the

European Journal of Preventive Cardiology

found that when you cycle through sun salutations, you’re not only de-stressing, but you’re also helping your heart.

The study included 37 trials in both the U.S. and Netherlands of more than 2,700 yoga practitioners, and concluded that yoga may have the same benefits as other forms of exercise, like biking, when it comes to reducing the risk factors of cardiovascular disease. What’s more, when compared with no exercise, yoga was found to decrease participants’ BMI, reduce systolic blood pressure and bad cholesterol and improve good cholesterol.

Can I get an om?
