Studio Notes

For about a year, Green Street Studios in Cambridge, MA, has been home to Moving Target, a series of contemporary master classes with guest artists from the local area and beyond. This fall, the series continued strengthening the ties between the Boston and New York dance communities. Green Street partnered with two major Boston dance presenters, World Music/CRASHarts and the Institute of Contemporary Art, to offer classes with the in-demand NYC artists performing at those venues: Kyle Abraham and Faye Driscoll, respectively. The studio is also collaborating with the New York City-based organization Dance New Amsterdam to bring in teachers from DNA’s RAW Material program, which fosters the work of emerging choreographers. Future dance scholars, take note: the Temple University dance department announced the launch of a new Master of Arts in Dance program that will begin in September 2013. The research-centered degree, which combines practical and theoretical coursework, prepares students for the university’s PhD in Dance program and provides professional development in research, writing, creative process, and pedagogy. The department also announced that the scholar Mark Franko, editor of Dance Research Journal and author, most recently, of Martha Graham in Love and War, will join its faculty in spring 2013. Dance teachers can start the year off right at Velocity Dance Center in Seattle, which is hosting a two-day workshop, Advanced Teaching Methods for Contemporary Technique, Jan. 12–13. The weekend intensive is led by Velocity co-founders Michele Miller and KT Niehoff (see “Choreography in Focus,” www.dancemagazine.com/choreography_in_focus/4591), as well as Mark Haim and Wade Madsen, who are regular teaching artists at the studio.
