The End of the NYIBC

Today it was announced that the New York International Ballet Competition has closed its doors. Though it’s a loss for the dance community worldwide, since the competition attracted promising ballet dancers, ages 17 to 24, from Egypt, Ecuador, Greece and many other countries, it doesn’t come as a complete shock. Just last January, NYIBC cancelled the 2013 edition of the competition, and today’s announcement alluded to financial troubles.

 

During its 30-year run, the competition helped jumpstart the careers of nearly 500 dancers, including ABT’s Gillian Murphy, The Royal’s Sarah Lamb, Boston Ballet’s Kathleen Breen Combes and Paris Opéra’s Ludmila Pagliero.
